Do You Care If iPad Magazines Go Both Ways?

and for some interesting reasons.

The latest issue of Sports Illustrated only supports viewing in "landscape" mode, as the publication has said that they were forced to cut costs because Apple does not allow iPad subscriptions at "a reasonable price."

My initial reaction to SI’s decision is that it’s a bad move.  I really like the ability to switch between landscape and portrait views when reading and in many apps in fact. Depending on time of day and where I’m reading something, one mode may be far more comfortable than the other.

designed specifically for the iPad’. It includes 50,000 quotes within the app (available even when you’re offline) as well as quick links out to its parent site for access to a total of 1.5 million quotes (hence the rather clumsy name for the app).

I like browsing through famous quotes as much as the next guy; probably a bit more in fact, so I was keen to try the app out when I got an email approach from its developer.  I’ve been trying it out for a few days now and have found a lot to like in it, as well as some not so likable bits.  Hit the break for some quick thoughts on both the good and the not-so-good

Target to Start Selling iPads October 3

1Michael N. Marcus September 25, 2010 at 9:40 am

>>I’m glad to see Target added to the list as we’ve got one just down the road from us and if they start carrying iPad accessories then that’s another handy place to check them out.<<

This move could make buying accessories worse, not better, at least in the short term.

Even without Target, there are not enough accessories for all of the stores that want to sell them. A few miles from here a BestBuy is right next to a Target. I assume neither one will have the camera adapter or case I want to buy.

iPad at Work – with Archeologists at Pompeii

iPad is revolutionizing how scientists work in the field. Rather than recording notes and sketches on paper, researchers at the site use iPad and apps to capture invaluable historical data faster, more easily, and with far better accuracy.

It’s getting to be where a day almost doesn’t go by where I don’t see reports of the iPad in use at another educational institution or in another line of work. Today, thanks to a great post over at Gear Diary, I came across this Apple case study of the iPad’s use by a team of archeologists at Pompeii.

Here’s a little more on how the team from the University of Cincinnati came to choose the iPad to work with:

The idea of using iPad to collect the massive data the project would generate came from Ellis’s University of Cincinnati colleague John Wallrodt, an expert on digital databases for archaeological projects. Wallrodt had looked unsuccessfully into using various tablet devices for field research, but when iPad was introduced in January 2010, he knew at once that it was right for their project. Says Wallrodt,

BlackBerry announces 7-inch PlayBook tablet, iPad competition heats up

sheriknetChris, I think yearly refreshes are a good pace, gives you a solid year with your device before it’s outdated, therefor eliminating buyers remorse.. My roomate bought the Droid 2 soon after launch, just to find out that not a full month later, they were discontinuing his model and making the world model with a 1.2 ghz processor.. I’d be frankly pissed if apple did this to their faithful.

GenoMalice says:September 27, 2010 at 5:46 pm

This looks great coupled with RIM’s new move to NOT using it’s networks to compress data over wi-fi it would be just as fast as the iPad in loading websites. If they bring BBM to this WITH HD Video Chatting….. I’m leaving for crackberry.com for good lol

iPad at Work – at Lloyds of London

Apple’s iPad has broken into yet another enterprise sector, this time the insurance industry with internationally-known insurer, Lloyds, working with brokers to test use of the Apple device in its underwriting room.

The trial began this month and will see iPads used instead of the more traditional underwriting slips. Brokers, Marsh, Cooper Gay and RK Harrison Group are testing the Apple devices.

Its hard to think of a more blue chip name than Lloyds of London when it comes to international financial institutions.  This news is further evidence that the iPad is already having far more impact in the enterprise arena than anyone (except maybe Steve Jobs and a few other Apple execs) expected.

CourseNotes for iPad Updated – Adds Further Sharing Features and More

Added premium note content available for in-app purchase

Here’s a little more about the app, straight from its App Store page:

CourseNotes is a student’s class companion for the iPad! CourseNotes lets you take notes during your classes and keep them organized by subject and class meeting. Review your notes later and search through multiple class meetings and notes all at once. You can also keep a ToDo list by marking notes as ToDo items, or track them as assignments and provide a due date.

Keeping class notes organized is a daunting task for any student. Put an end to unreadable notes on torn up spiral notebooks, and stop paging through your notes looking desparately for that one thing you remember writing that one time… Let CourseNotes be your guide!

Miss a class? Need to print or share your notes with a friend? CourseNotes lets you share your note sessions and view your friends shared notes right in the app. You can also share notes via email or peer-to-peer with other CourseNotes users over BlueTooth or a local network.

Big New Features for iPad in the iOS 4.2 Software Update

New Features for iPad

The Big Four

Multitasking: For me, and many others I’m sure, this is THE big headline addition.  iOS 4.2 will bring much greater multitasking capabilities to the iPad.  Just as we’ve already seen on the iPhone, 3rd party apps can now remain running in the background for several clear purposes – e.g Pandora playing music, and navigation apps).  More importantly, for me anyway, 4.2 gives us an easy and elegant solution for rapid app switching.  A quick double-tap on the home button brings up the Multitasking Bar (shown in the screencap at the top of this post), from where you can quickly launch any of your recently run apps. Rapid app switching makes me far more productive on the iPad and iPhone.

iPod nano fashion: a lady’s best high-tech friend?

iPod nano earring

Yes the new iPod nano are very capable of being used as earrings. It is easy to use some two part epoxy and attach a loop and then a regular fishhook earring holder. It is a bit heavy for an earring (though I have worn heavier). It would also present the same issue of not being able to easily change your application or music. For the picture I just clipped the nano right onto my ear, this was not the most comfortable of ways to wear it, however, nor was it very secure.

My Favorite iPad Apps List

an opportunity to cull less-used apps, devise new ways to arrange apps and home screens, and spend some time thinking on which are really your favorite and most used apps.

So I did some of that culling and thinking while getting my new iPad setup just as I want it during the course of its first couple days with me.

My culling was pretty effective, even though I still have nine screens worth of apps (though some of them are not completely full).

For what it’s worth, here is my latest approach to the organization of my home screens on the iPad, and which apps I’ve found are my current favorite / most used ones – with some quick thoughts on some of those apps as well:

Will Apple Announce a New 7 Inch iPad Model at Next Week’s Event?

Special event’ on September 1.

I don’t see how Apple can not do this.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is an Android 2.2-based tablet with a seven-inch screen.

It looks damn slick in this promo video.

I don’t see how Apple can let smaller and less-expensive tablets such as this tempt people away from the iPad.

The iPad is vulnerable both on the issues of price and size.

I don’t feel 100% convinced we’ll see this announced next week, but I do think Mike’s argument makes sense.  Check out his two posts on this subject here:

My New Favorite iPad Wallaper – Landscape 01

This is actually a wallpaper made for the iPhone, but for me it works beautifully on the iPad as well.  It’s called simply Landscape 01 and it’s by Paul Isabella.  I spotted it via the RSS feed from the superb Poolga.com site.

I generally use more striking (or personal) images for lock screen wallpapers, while going with very simple, non-distracting backgrounds for the home screen.  This wall seems to strike the perfect balance for use on both screens.  It’s a gorgeous, subtle image that works perfectly for me in both places.

iOS 4.1 features: HDR photos

Dirk-

Is there AVRCP?

Darkstar says:September 3, 2010 at 1:14 pm

That really sucks about the iPod Touch’s camera not being 5MP. I was going to get one for my girlfriend so that we could FaceTime/SexTime (lol), but the fact that the main back camera only takes 1280×720 photos is a total dealbreaker for me, regardless of the 720p video. If I’m going to spend $300 bucks on the 32 gig version, a full 5MP camera is an absolute MUST.

I’m definitely looking forward to HDR functions on my iPhone 4 though. From what I’ve seen so far, it looks like it works pretty well for a phone camera, so any improvement is better.

I too, however, am hoping that they take out that yellow warming filter that makes most indoor photos look like crap. That really pisses me off!!! Outdoor pictures typically look fine, but indoor photos are terrible. I wish they’d update the camera app in general to give us photophiles more control over the camera.

Mark says:September 3, 2010 at 1:50 pm

Looks like the end of the recently reviewed ClearCam app that I bought 3 days ago. Glad it was only $1.99 since HDR seems to do the same thing or more.

Tj says:September 3, 2010 at 5:06 pm

It should be noted that when using the HDR feature the LED flash will not work.

Kevin says:September 3, 2010 at 11:19 pm

Is there any logical explanation as to why they didn’t incorporate the use of a volume button for picture taking? It’s absurd that I have to still use the screen to snap a photo! Why wont they do this?

HBO Go Coming to the iPad in 6 Months

DrSteele August 24, 2010 at 11:13 am

Does anyone else feel they are missing a real revenue stream of NEW customers?

I don't have HBO on my cable. For $20 a year or $2 a month I may put on my iPad. Maybe I'd find out that I enjoy their content so much that I'd add to my cable too? As it stands, I'll ignore this app; continue to love Netflix on my iPad and continue to whine that one of my favorite apps hasn't yet, made its way to the iPhone. Yes, I know you can hack to get Netflix on iPhone, but I won't do that.
